Vision Group Seeking Gateway Designs

Call for Entries:

Artist ideas for Henderson Gateway Design

The Henderson Vision Group is seeking artistic renderings depicting ideas for a Henderson Gateway Design for placement at the foot of the Second Street overpass leading into downtown. The intention is to create a distinct “entrance” to the Historic Downtown of Henderson, Kentucky, that could potentially be replicated at other entry points in a smaller or derivative way.
The entry could, but is not required, to contain such elements as artwork, architectural details, sidewalk enhancements, banners, hanging baskets, plantings, traffic islands, flags, etc.

Project Description

The purpose of the call is to receive a rendering for a Henderson Gateway Design to be presented to the Henderson Vision Group for future consideration and begin the conversation. This project is a citizen-driven effort to distinguish Historic Downtown Henderson as a true destination.

Design Criteria

The renderings should reflect Henderson’s heritage and history, helping to create downtown as a destination. Although submissions will not be used as construction documents and are intended only as a source of inspiration, entries that demonstrate a knowledge of realistic construction practices and the City of Henderson’s planning and permitting process will have an advantage. The rendering that is selected becomes the property of the Henderson Vision Group and the submitter agrees to waive any claim of ownership of the design.

Henderson’s branding story
Henderson’s recently revealed branding initiative would ideally be an ingredient in the Gateway Design. For consideration when forming your ideas:
Henderson is framed by nature. The river rolls by. The birds fly. Home to John James Audubon and W.C. Handy and others who turned life into beauty, art, commerce and success. Henderson captures what’s inside you. Then brings it out. A vibrant downtown. River up close. Nature and history as its backdrop. It inspires. Anything is possible. Come, choose your path and stride into it with determination. Henderson is where you can “discover your nature.” You can view a YouTube video showcasing the Henderson at:

History of Henderson

Location Description

The desired location is on Second Street at the foot of the overpass (where Carlisle Street intersects.) But at least some portion of the overpass itself could be included in the concept. The specific scope is open to the artist’s discretion and vision. Keep in mind that some variation of the design may be replicated at other entry points to downtown in the future.

Special Considerations

1) Physical challenges of sign location (above/below grade public/private infrastructure) that would either prohibit and/or limit the signage.
2) Must meet ADA standards.
3) Any signage over the roadway needs to meet the minimum clearance height of 14-feet.
4) Attaching any signage to a building will be limited because of the building’s varying heights, and the building’s structure integrity.

Submission Requirements

Please submit the following by mail or email:
  • Resume or short biography
  • Up to 3 separate designs may be submitted by each designer.
  • Each design entered must consist of a minimum of two (2) two-dimensional renderings from different perspectives depicting the following:
    • Location
    • Scale
    • Construction materials

The competition is open to all who are interested.
