Audubon State Park Recieves 3 Awards

John James Audubon State Park recently received three awards at the annual conference of the Kentucky Recreation and Parks Society. The park was awarded the Dorthy Mullen Arts and Humanities Award, the Outstanding State Park Award and the Support Award.

The following is an excerpt from the Gleaner article by Donna B. Stinnett about the awards:

The Dorothy Mullen Arts & Humanities Award essentially honors Kim McGrew, the park’s art educator, who for the past 10 years has organized a three-day fall arts festival that has served disabled students in a five-county region.

“Securing grants and donations from local foundations such as the Raymond B. Preston Family Foundation and businesses such as Sureway, ensures that the festival can continue to be a free event for all schools to participate in,” Tompkins wrote in her nomination.

“There are hundreds of recreational programs at our park and others that are well-run and successful by numbers and accomplishments, but they are all designed for children and adults who have no disability,” she added. ” We feel this festival is truly outstanding because it gives an underserved group the opportunity to attend — free of charge — a three day festival that celebrates their different abilities instead of focusing on their disabilities.
