Jan 1-Feb 29: Early Pioneers of Henderson County Exhibit, Henderson Depot Community Room. A collection of portraits, memorabilia, and occupational tools will be displayed with bios of some of Henderson's earliest settlers. The exhibit is sponsored by the Henderson County Historical & Genealogical Society. On Saturday, February 16th, there will be a spinning wheel and weaving demonstration as part of the exhibit. The demonstration will be performed by Henderson's YarnAlong staff and will be ongoing that day from 10am-12pm. Erma Bush will portray Miss Dinnie Thompson in the Kentucky Chautauqua program in conjunction with the "Everyday People Part 2" art exhibit. Feb 9: Identifying Wintertime Backyard Birds, Audubon Museum, John James Audubon State Park. Many birds of the far north wing their way here for winter, thinking of this as their Caribbean-like getaway. Join Sharon Sorenson, newspaper columnist, for this captivating workshop illustrated by several hundred photos. You'll learn recognize all our winter friends, including year-round regulars that change into drab winter clothes, the six kinds of sparrows and the four black-colored birds-three of which aren't blackbirds at all! After this workshop, you'll be fully prepared to participate in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) co-sponsored by Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society and to do your vital part for citizen science. At the Audubon Museum, pick up instructions and a reporting checklist and count the number of each bird species you witness at our feeder station anytime between 8am and 4pm Feb 14-17. Unsure about which bird is what? Come to Sharon Sorenson's Wintertime Bird Identification Program Feb 9 to learn their names and habits. Feb 16: Spinning & Weaving Demonstration, the Depot Community Room, Henderson. The Depot Community Room is hosting a spinning wheel and weaving demonstration as part of the Early Pioneers of Henderson County Exhibit, sponsored by the Henderson County Historical & Genealogical Society. Visitors may watch as thread is spun from cotton and made into thread on a period spinning wheel, as well as a demonstration of weaving on a loom. The demonstration will be ongoing that day from 10am-12pm. The demonstration will be performed by Henderson's YarnAlong staff. Feb 29 - Mar 31: "Breaking Barriers: African American Women of Kentucky" Exhibit, Henderson Depot Community Room, Henderson, KY. In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Community Room is hosting this special exhibit. Kentucky’s black women have made contributions to society in the fields of business, medicine, education, government, entertainment, art, politics, the military, and many more. While this exhibit cannot contain all of these accomplished women, it is a tribute to several women who broke down the twin barriers of race and gender. Mar 28-30: Civil War Living History, Henderson Depot Community Room/Audubon Mill Park. Cobb’s Battery and Adam Rankin Johnson Camp No. 1910 are hosting a Civil War Living History in Audubon Mill Park on Henderson’s Riverfront Mar 28-30. The event is being presented in conjunction with the Henderson County Historical and Genealogical Society and the Depot Community Room. Also present will be the 15th Tennessee Infantry Company G; the 42nd Tennessee Infantry; King’s Battery; and 3rd Kentucky Infantry, which includes members of the Orphan Brigade. Events these days will include artillery drills, blacksmithing demonstrations, period cooking, sampling, and sewing; and sutler supply tents staffed by re-enactors in period dress. Highlights include cannon firing demonstrations by Cobb’s Battery.This is event is free and open to public viewing all weekend. In February 1779, George Rogers Clark and his army of 46 men were able to defeat the British at Fort Vincennes, winning a battle that wold prevent the British from ever having control over th Midwest.
