Bluegrass in the Park Features Live Music, Children’s Activities, Sporting Events

The 28th annual Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival is coming up August 9-10, 2013 in Henderson, Kentucky. The festival will feature great Bluegrass music, events, and food – all in an incredible location on the banks of the Ohio River.

This year’s line-up boasts both traditional and progressive Bluegrass acts, and two returning bands that were past festival fan-favorites! Friday events will be held 5:00pm-11:00pm. Saturday events are planned for 7:00am-11:00pm.

Pokey LaFarge and his band to perform on Friday night

Friday’s headliner Pokey LaFarge is a true lyrical storyteller, the plot delivered smoothly through his dynamic vocals. Reviews of his album were featured in the most recent issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, which compared the artist to an old time radio “set to ‘Roaring ’20s’ and blasting out jump blues, western swing, primordial jazz, ragtime and string-band tunes.”

Other Friday performers include The Henhouse Prowlers and Hot Day at the Zoo, whose progressive Bluegrass and Americana-infused rock and roll will resonate with fans of the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons. The Fox on the Run 5K will take place at 6:30pm, with proceeds benefiting the Shelter for Women and Children.

On Saturday, the festival kicks off with Breakfast in the Park and live music by Keith Vincent. Enjoy an afternoon of free performances, while the stage fills with some of the best names in Bluegrass, including Audie Blaylock & Redline, Detour, Westbound Rangers, Jerry Salley & Breakin’ New Ground, Sons of Bluegrass, and King’s Highway.

Several sporting events, including the Pickin’ & Pedalin’ Bicycle Tour, Flippin’ & Flyin’ Disc Golf Tournament and Jumpin’ & Jammin’ Street Pole Vault will take place throughout the day. Folklife and children’s activities will take place in the north end of the park from 10am-2pm Saturday. Exhibitors include a children’s harmonica workshop, origami, antique bicycle display, dulcimer performers, and much more. The festival will also feature inflatable amusements for the kids – one ticket for all day fun (weather permitting).

Cost of all music events in the Park are free thanks to sponsors, advertisers and volunteers. For more information about the festival, go to or call 1-800-648-3128
